Suction numbers keep inflating, “AI navigation” means five different things, and the price itself is a moving target. Here’s what actually predicts whether a robot will keep your floors clean — and where the numbers we rank on come from.

First, understand what “$500” means in this market

The under-$500 robot vacuum market in mid-2026 is almost entirely a street-price phenomenon. Ignore the Pa number; look for measured pickup

Claimed suction in pascals is this category’s version of the inflated “sq ft” claim: there’s no independent standard behind it, and the numbers race upward every model year (4,000Pa to 24,800Pa across the units we researched). What predicts real cleaning is measured pickup testing. At this price the navigation split is simple. LiDAR (including the cheaper LDS and point-laser variants) builds an accurate map, cleans in efficient rows, and works in the dark — it’s now standard even at $229 (TP-Link’s Tapo RV30 Max Plus). Camera-based systems can match it but struggle in dim rooms. Random-bounce robots with no mapping (the $90–130 Lefant tier) are only defensible in small studios.
