Sleeping Pad R-Values, Explained

How a 2020 industry-wide test standard made pad warmth ratings actually comparable — and how to buy by the number.

For most of sleeping pads’ history as a product category, “warm enough for winter” was a marketing claim, not a measurement. One brand’s R-4 could outperform another brand’s R-5, because each company ran its own test, on its own equipment, under its own assumptions. That changed in 2020. Here’s what the number on the box means now, and how to use it to actually buy the right pad.

What R-value measures

R-value is thermal resistance — how well a material resists heat flowing through it, the same unit used for home insulation. For a sleeping pad, that means resistance to heat escaping from your body, through the pad, into the ground. Higher R-value means warmer. It says nothing about cushioning, stability, or noise; a pad can have a high R-value and still be uncomfortable, and a comfortable pad can still be cold. R-value is specifically an answer to one question: will the ground steal your body heat overnight?

The problem: pre-2020 numbers weren’t comparable

Before the industry adopted a shared test method, R-value claims were whatever each manufacturer’s in-house rig produced. Some brands used actual thermal-resistance testing; others estimated warmth from temperature-range marketing language with no disclosed methodology at all. A pad labeled “R-5” from one company and “R-5” from another could differ meaningfully in real-world warmth, because “R-5” didn’t mean the same test. That made pad-shopping-by-number close to useless — you were really shopping by brand reputation.

The fix: ASTM F3340-18

In 2016, Therm-a-Rest and a group of competing sleeping pad manufacturers began jointly developing a standardized test method — an unusual move for direct competitors, but one that paid off for buyers. The result, ASTM F3340-18, was adopted industry-wide starting in 2020 and is now the common protocol nearly every major brand tests to.

The test itself is mechanical and repeatable. Per ASTM’s own scope language, the standard “covers the measurement of the thermal resistance of camping mattresses in conditions of steady-state heat transfer, using a two-plate apparatus.” The pad sits under constant compressive force between a guarded hot plate (held near body temperature) and a cold plate. Heat moves one-dimensionally through the pad’s thickness; the test measures how much energy is needed to keep the hot plate at a steady temperature. A pad that insulates well requires less energy to hold that temperature — and gets a higher R-value. Because it’s a controlled lab measurement rather than a field guess, an R-value from one ASTM-tested pad is now directly comparable to any other ASTM-tested pad, regardless of brand.

The standard applies to every pad construction — inflatable air pads with or without insulation or reflective liners, self-inflating open-cell foam pads, and closed-cell foam pads — which is what makes cross-category shopping (air pad vs. foam pad) possible on the same scale. ASTM’s own documentation also flags a caveat worth remembering: because the test measures one-dimensional heat transfer straight through the pad, it may not fully capture real-world losses at the edges, on uncovered surfaces, or from a pad compressing under a shifting sleeper. Treat R-value as a highly reliable comparative number, not a lab-perfect prediction of exactly how warm you’ll feel.

Retailer adoption reinforced it fast. REI and MEC both now require an ASTM R-value on every pad they sell — which is a meaningful filter, since it pushed out pads that either hadn’t been tested or wouldn’t publish a result.

Picking R-value by season

There’s no single official cutoff table, but manufacturer guidance and independent testers converge on roughly the same bands:

Therm-a-Rest’s own published framing lands in the same range: roughly R 1–2 for summer, R 2–4 for three-season spring-through-fall use, and R 4–6 for winter. Treat the boundaries as soft — your own cold tolerance, the tent floor, and whether you’re sleeping on snow or bare ground all shift where you should land in the range.

R-values stack when you add a pad

Because every ASTM-tested pad is measured on the same additive thermal scale, R-values sum when you layer pads. A closed-cell foam pad (R 2.0) under an insulated air pad (R 4.5) gives you roughly R 6.5 combined — which is how a lot of winter and shoulder-season backpackers get cold-rated warmth without buying (or carrying) one single heavy pad. It’s also a cheap way to add durability and a safety margin: foam underneath protects an air pad from punctures and keeps you insulated even if the air pad fails overnight.

What R-value doesn’t tell you

R-value is a warmth measurement, full stop — it says nothing about how a pad feels to sleep on. Two pads with an identical R-value can differ enormously in thickness, firmness, stability (some air pads feel tippy), and noise (some crinkle loudly with every movement). If comfort and warmth both matter to you — they should — read R-value off the spec sheet, then go to independent hands-on reviews (SectionHiker, Switchback Travel, OutdoorGearLab, and similar testers all pad-test extensively) for the comfort side of the equation before you buy.

The bottom line

R-value is the one sleeping-pad spec that’s actually apples-to-apples, because since 2020 it’s backed by a shared, independently defined lab test rather than brand marketing. Buy for the coldest conditions you realistically expect, remember that R-values add when you stack a pad, and don’t assume warmth equals comfort — check both before you commit to a multi-night trip on it.
