How to Choose a Cordless Stick Vacuum

Why the suction number on the box is marketing, and what to weigh instead — weight, runtime, batteries, and the Dyson durability question.

A cordless stick vacuum is the one appliance where the biggest number on the box is close to meaningless. Manufacturers advertise suction in air watts (AW) or pascals (Pa), runtime “up to” figures measured in the weakest eco mode, and neither predicts how well the thing cleans your carpet. Here’s how to read past the marketing — and the honest numbers we collected for every model we researched, sortable in our Cordless Stick Vacuum Specs data table.

The suction number is a marketing spec

Dyson quotes air watts (150–290 AW across its current line). Most Chinese-made brands quote pascals (25,000–26,000 Pa is typical). Shark and Bissell often publish no number at all. These units aren’t interchangeable, aren’t measured under a common standard, and none of them account for the floorhead — which is where cleaning actually happens.

Independent testers get around this by measuring for themselves. Vacuum Wars runs instrumented tests — sealed suction with a manometer, airflow with an anemometer, a carpet deep-clean test with sand embedded in medium-pile carpet, hair-wrap and filtration tests — across a large fleet of cordless models, and explicitly emphasizes usable suction over the spec-sheet number. Cordless sticks live on a physics budget: a bigger battery and bin mean more weight in your hand and above your head (these are top-heavy machines — you feel every ounce doing curtains and ceiling corners). Across the models we researched:

A removable battery is the cheapest longevity insurance

The battery is the first thing to die in a cordless vacuum — usually years before the motor. If the pack is user-swappable, an aging vacuum is a $50–$150 battery away from new; if it’s fixed, a dead pack can mean a service ticket or a whole new machine. Most of the models we researched have removable packs (Dyson, Tineco, Miele, LG, Samsung, Bissell); the notable holdouts are Shark’s current cordless line and the budget eufy HomeVac S1. A removable pack also lets big-home owners buy a spare and double effective runtime — which is a more honest fix than trusting the “up to 120 minutes” eco-mode claim.

While we’re on batteries: lithium packs are also the main safety story in this category. The CPSC’s vacuum recall page listed a July 2026 recall of Rowenta cordless vacuums for a battery fire/burn hazard — worth a glance at that page before buying any cordless model, especially off-brand ones.

Filtration: HEPA is only half the spec

For allergy households the filter media matters less than whether the airflow path is sealed — an unsealed machine with a HEPA filter leaks fine dust around the filter and back into your air. Look for “whole-machine HEPA filtration” or equivalent sealed-system language (Dyson and Tineco publish this claim; most brands say only “HEPA filter,” which is weaker), and note that some budget models — the Bissell PowerClean DualBrush in our table — aren’t HEPA-certified at all. The lab-vs-owner durability gap (a.k.a. the Dyson question)

Here’s the honest tension in this category. Dyson consistently sits at or near the top of instrumented lab rankings — Vacuum Wars’ own current best overall cordless pick is a Dyson, on measured suction and airflow. But owner and repair-community sentiment, which we surveyed through forum-summary sources (we couldn’t fetch Reddit firsthand, so treat this as a directional signal rather than a measured one), is notably more mixed on Dyson’s multi-year durability than on Shark or Miele — the recurring paraphrase is that you’re paying a premium for design and performance, not for longevity. Miele and SEBO draw the strongest longevity reputations (10–15-year claims from owner and repair-tech reports), Shark a solid mid-range one.

One-time lab tests can’t see year three. Consumer Reports’ owner survey — covering, per its published methodology, over a hundred thousand non-robotic vacuums bought over the past decade — is the largest systematic attempt to measure it, and it’s a big part of why CR weighs predicted reliability alongside lab suction.
