Why Every Lab Crowns a Different Best Laundry Detergent

Consumer Reports, Wirecutter, and Good Housekeeping all test rigorously — and still disagree. The reasons tell you how to choose.

Ask four of the most trusted product-testing operations in America which laundry detergent is best and you’ll get four different answers — often about the same two brands. That’s not a scandal, and it’s not evidence that testing is theater. It’s the predictable result of labs making different, defensible choices about stains, water, dosing, and what “best” even means. Once you see those choices, the disagreement stops being confusing and starts being useful: it tells you which verdict was run under conditions closest to your laundry room.

Four rigorous labs, four different crowns

Here’s the current landscape, as each outlet reports it (we link rather than reprint their scores — the numbers are their work, not ours):

What the disagreement actually measures

Different stain sets. Every lab picks a panel of stains, and that panel is a value judgment. A protocol heavy on enzymatic stains (blood, grass, body oil) rewards detergents with strong protease and lipase packages; one heavy on tannins and particulates (coffee, dirt, clay) rewards surfactant strength and anti-redeposition agents. Two honest labs with different stain panels will rank the same detergents differently — neither is wrong about the stains it tested.

Water temperature. Enzymes and surfactants behave differently in cold water than warm. A lab that weights cold-water washing (as Wirecutter’s recent testing reportedly does) will favor formulas engineered for it; a warm-wash protocol can flatter detergents that lean on temperature to activate. Since most US households now default to cold washes, this single choice can flip a ranking.

Water hardness. Calcium and magnesium in hard water bind surfactants before they can bind soil. Consumer Reports tests in hard water explicitly, which is why its tough-stain recommendations are a better guide for the roughly half of US homes with hard water than a soft-water-only test. If a detergent wins in one lab and loses in another, water chemistry is a prime suspect.

Dosing. Labs must choose: manufacturer-recommended dose, equal dose by weight, or equal dose by cost. Concentrated formulas look brilliant at label dose and ordinary at equal weight; cheap detergents look better per dollar. None of these choices is neutral.

What “best” means. This is the biggest one, and it’s not about chemistry at all. CR refuses to collapse its data into a single winner and recommends by use case. Good Housekeeping splits by format and factors in home-tester experience. Wirecutter’s whole editorial format demands one pick. Reviewed ranks a single list. Identical data run through those four framings would still produce four different headlines.

The axis the performance labs ignore: what’s in the bottle

Every protocol above measures how well a detergent removes stains. None of them certifies what the detergent leaves behind — on your skin, down your drain, in your indoor air. That’s a separate question with a separate, public answer: the EPA’s Safer Choice program reviews every intentionally added ingredient in a product against human-health and environmental criteria, and certification is pass/fail and free to check. The two axes are starting to converge: Good Housekeeping’s 2026 award-winning all Sensitive Fresh carries Safer Choice certification — a detergent that won a performance-and-home-tester award and passed EPA’s ingredient review. Ingredient-safety certification is no longer a consolation prize for weak cleaners.

One caution in the other direction: Safer Choice says nothing about cleaning power. A certified detergent may or may not shift a grass stain. Use the certification as a filter, not a ranking.

How to actually choose

Stop looking for the consensus winner — there isn’t one — and match the verdict to your conditions:

  1. Match the test to your water. On hard water (much of the Midwest, Southwest, and Florida), weight Consumer Reports’ hard-water results over anyone’s soft-water test. If you’re unsure, your water utility’s annual report lists hardness, or a $10 test strip settles it.
  2. Match the test to your temperature. If you wash cold — and with a modern HE machine you probably should — favor picks from cold-water protocols and look for “cold” formulations. Any detergent you buy for an HE machine must carry the HE symbol; suds from a non-HE formula genuinely impair rinsing in low-water machines.
  3. Sensitive skin trumps stain scores. Dye- and fragrance-free formulas (Tide Free & Gentle, Persil’s sensitive line, all Sensitive Fresh, Kirkland Free & Clear) appear near the top of nearly every lab’s list — the performance penalty for going fragrance-free is now small to nil, so there’s little reason for reactive-skin households to accept perfume.
  4. Pick your format honestly. Liquids are cheapest per load and let you pre-treat; pods win on convenience and overdose-proofing but cost more per load (and are a real poisoning hazard with toddlers in the house); powders — including the current crop of Ultra Oxi-style formulas — are having a genuine comeback in lab results.
  5. Use Safer Choice as your ingredient filter. If what’s in the bottle matters to you, start from the certified list and then apply the performance verdicts above to what remains.

The labs disagree because your laundry room isn’t standard. That’s the whole lesson: the best detergent is the one that wins under your water, your temperature, and your skin — and the outlets’ fine print, more than their headlines, tells you which one that is.
